A nine-day cultural immersion with local guide
Galicia: Pristine beaches nestled below dramatic cliffs. Rolling vineyards amidst ancient forests. Quaint fishing villages and deserted islands. But what makes it Spain's best kept secret?
Is it the seafood, plucked straight from the Atlantic ocean, paired with delicious local wine? The breathtaking coastal hikes? Or the historic Camino de Santiago winding through the emerald countryside? Join us and find out for yourself!
The programme includes:
- Luxury accomodation on a country estate
- Gourmet Spanish cuisine and excellent local wine (full board)
- Activities including hiking, culinary tastings, historical and cultural tours and more
- Hands-on Spanish language classes which directly relate to the itinerary
Read on to discover more.
Day One: The Journey Begins
After a short transfer from Santiago Airport you will arrive at our country estate, nestled amidst olive groves in the picturesque Galician countryside
Enjoy a glass of local wine and meet the team, and fellow travelers, as we present the programme, then make yourself at home and explore the grounds before the welcome dinner.
Day Two: The River Camino and the Island of Arousa
For our first excursion we will embark on a by-river variant of the Camino de Santiago, tracing the path of the Apostle Santiago's remains, while we discover ancient Cruceiro stone sculptures which dot the way.
Then we´ll hop off onto the enchanting Illha de Arousa, with its white beaches and crystalline waters, to hike the scenic Ruta do Faro and take in a stunning panorama from the Punta Cabalo Lighthouse.
We will return to the estate in the afternoon where you may relax or take part in optional activities such as Spanish language session or Spanish cooking, before dinner is served.
Day Three: Santiago de Compostela
Next, Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in history. Marvel at the architectural masterpiece that is the Cathedral and ascend to its very rooftop for a tour.
Then get to know the city, discovering ancient churches and palaces before we gather at the bustling market to soak up that authentic Galician atmosphere and sample the tapas.
Day Four: Wine, History and a Hidden Monastery
Today we´ll visit a legendary winery, tucked away in the countryside, to discover the secrets of Albariño - one of Galicia's renowned wines. After a guided tour of the vineyards we will learn about the traditional winemaking process, before savoring the award-winning Pazo de Rubianes wines.
Next, we will follow the Ruta da Pedra e Água (6.5km), a winding river trail, passing ancient stone mills before discovering the incredible Armenteira Monastary. (The route isn't that strenuous but if you'd rather take it easy then you can ride to the destination by car),
Day Five: The Cíes Islands
To visit the Cies Islands archipelago is a breathtaking experience, and one that must be reserved months in advance due to strictly limited tourist numbers.
Located off the coast of Galicia, Spain, these pristine islands are renowned for their stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush greenery. Whether you're hiking along scenic trails, sunbathing on white sandy beaches, or exploring ancient ruins, the Cies Islands offer a perfect escape into nature and a variety of ways to spend the day.
Day Six: Combarro, Pontevedra and a Furancho
Today you can simply take the morning slow, or take part in Spanish classes before having lunch on the estate.
In the afternoon we'll visit Combarro - a nearby fishing village famous for its idiosyncratic architecture.
Next we'll head to Pontevedra, where we'll wander through the beautifully preserved historic centre with its vibrant atmosphere.
And for a unique dinner experience, we'll head to a Furancho - a very Galician form of hospitality, where you are invited to sample homemade food on a private farmstead.
Day Seven: Rapa das Bestas
Now for something really different: the Rapa das Bestas festival, a local event where skilled horsemen tame wild horses in a traditional display. Witness the age-old tradition of trimming the horses' manes and tails which ensures their well-being for the year ahead. Immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, enjoy traditional music and dance, and witness a unique piece of Galician culture.
Day Eight: The Healing Waters of Caldas de Reis
Today we´ll hike from O Pazo to Caldas de Reis,(9km) through the delightfully lush countryside passing the Segade waterfalls, botanical gardens and the Celtic ruins at Castrolandin, where we'll learn the history of the settlement.
When we arrive we'll dip our feet in the therapeutic waters of Caldas de Reis, renowned for its thermal springs, with the option to unwind with a rejuvenating spa experience.
Day Nine: Meet the Marisqueros
Today we'll hop onto a boat for a tour of Arousa bay, meeting the marisqueros (local seafood farmers) and witnessing first-hand how they cultivate mussels. We'll also catch a glimpse of the underwater life through our glass-bottomed vessel. Of course, the experience won't be complete until we taste their exquisite produce for ourselves.
Back on land there'll be time to explore and enjoy the panoramic views of the Atlantic islands before we indulge in a true Spanish classic - paella - at a beachside restaurant.
Farewell Dinner & Traditional Queimada
At our farewell dinner, as well as sampling a range of local delicacies we will experience a Queimada, a unique Galician ritual said to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.
